VS extension newly installed hangs on build

I've just discovered Advanced Installer and installed it and the Visual Studio extension
I've converted an existing VS Installer project to Advanced Installer, it's a very simple solution with just one main project and one installer project, and it's a very basic app

now any attempt to build or clean the project just causes VS to hang
the output says "build started at xx:xx....", a small animated icon is present in the status bar showing build activity happening, but any time I try to click in the window I just get a desktop notification "Visual Studio is busy, we'll automatically report this delay to Microsoft....". nothing changes even if I leave it for several hours, and nothing responds in VS I can't even close the software, all I can do is end task from task manager
what's likely to be going wrong here? I've tried rebooting etc
